Special Statement

Union Settlement is deeply saddened and outraged by the vicious ongoing and escalating attacks against Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders. These attacks are heinous and indefensible.

The verbal and physical assaults are based in racism and ignorance – COVID-19 is a public health crisis, not a racial, ethnic or immigrant issue – and any assertions to the contrary are baseless and wrong. We call for the immediate end to the hate crimes and for those involved to be prosecuted to fullest extent of the law.

Vaccine Equity

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS, JAN 22, 2021

By Union Settlement Executive Director, David Nocenti and Board Member, Erika Donovan Estades

“Indeed, if we do not take decisive action now, we will end up with herd immunity only in predominantly white communities, while residents of communities of color — like those our two organizations serve here in East Harlem — will continue to be hospitalized and die from COVID-19, for many months thereafter.”

2020 Annual Report

2020 was supposed to be a celebratory year for Union Settlement, as we marked our 125th Anniversary of service here in East Harlem, but obviously the COVID19 pandemic completely changed those plans. Although our plans shifted, we remained committed to our mission of creating opportunities in East Harlem by offering comprehensive programs that help underserved residents improve their skills and build better lives for themselves and their families.

Get help to the people in deepest need

by Union Settlement Executive Director, David Nocenti
Published in the New York Daily News on May 14, 2020

“At long last, significant media attention is being focused on the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on low-income communities of color. Unfortunately, those press reports woefully understate the depth and breadth of the problem.”
